Changing Diagnostic Codes in EMIS LV

The March 2003 Read Code update is through with definitive codes for Type 1 & 2 diabetes. We now need to switch to using these, away from the synonym codes we were using. This is actually a very quick job.

EMIS LV has an inbuilt program for changing all instances of 1 type of code to another. You probably will have received an EMIS update EU-UI on this, concerning code conversions they have set up. For practices that have been using C109-2 & C108-2 to code diabetes there is no need to use the extensive code conversions they have provided. (Incidentally using them as they are may cause more confusion as they re switching C108 subcodes (IDDM) to type 1 - and as we all know not all IDDM are Type 1).

Proceed as follows:
1) From main menu DT-C-M-H to get to Code Conversion screen.
2) Examine any code conversions on the screen. Delete the diabetes conversions if they are there by highlighting & deleting the entries. If there are other conversions there eg for immunisation codes leave them & they will be converted when you run the diabetes conversions.
3) A to Add code to convert
4) Enter C108-2 (code to alter) - press ENTER - choose line A 'Type 1 diabetes mellitus' - press ENTER
5) Then C10E (to convert to) - press ENTER - choose line A 'Type 1 diabetes mellitus' - press ENTER
6) You should then get the message C108-2 will be converted to C10E - Are you sure? - type y (assuming the message is correct!)
7) Repeat this procedure for C109-2 converting to C10F and press ENTER to get back to the Code Conversion screen
8) You should have 2 lines under 'Codes already set to convert', one for C109-2 & one for C108-2
9) You can run the program by hitting R - best do this while you go & have a coffee as it will take about 10 minutes. Hit enter when you get the message it has finished.

Job done!!

The diabetes protocol on the website will be updated and the Miquest queries will also use these codes.  We are planning to update these file at the end of the week, i.e.. Friday 18th April, to allow practices time to update their codes.
